Legionella Training
The Approved Code of Practice and Guidance L8, "Legionnaires' Disease – The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems", as well as the consultative document, requires both initial and refresher training to be undertaken on a regular basis.
Inadequate management, lack of training and poor communication have all been contributory factors in outbreaks of Legionnaires' Disease. It is therefore crucial that responsible persons (a Manager, Director or someone with similar status or authority) are suitably trained and aware of the risks on their premises.
The objectives for the course are to ensure understanding of the key control methods for legionella. This is achieved using handouts and group exercises. Delegates will understand the background to the ACoP and the importance of maintaining up to date and complete risk assessments and record systems.

The HSE issued a Guidance note to ACoP L8 in Autumn 2007- "Removal of Pack from Cooling Towers for Cleaning and Inspection".
As they state:
"The maintenance of a water system in a clean state is an important part of managing the risk from legionella. The removal of pack from a cooling tower for cleaning as part of a cleaning regime is an issue which causes confusion and conflict for cooling tower users, water treatment companies, other service providers and inspectors of health and safety."

The purpose of refresher training is to update and refresh information to experienced operators, managers and others involved in Legionella Control and Management. The courses include updates from the latest outbreaks plus information issued by the Legionella Control Association, Health Protection Agency and HSE.
Why Refresher Training?
Paragraph 45 of the ACoP states that regular refresher training should be given and that records of all initial and refresher training need to be maintained.
Why Competence?
Paragraph 45 states that those who carry out control measures and strategies should be informed, instructed, trained to a standard and suitably assessed. They should be trained to a standard which ensures that tasks are carried out in a safe, technically competent manner.
Competence
To formally assess the competence of the delegates attending. This will cover aspects of competence which can be measured in the classroom. It does not include those aspects which must be measured on-the-job, and competence should be reassessed and recorded by management regularly (ideally at least every two years).
