Asbestos Training

The greatest single cause of work related deaths in the UK

  • At least 3,500 people in Great Britain die every year from these diseases, making asbestos the single greatest cause of work related fatalities.
  • Numbers are predicted to rise to 10,000 a year by 2020.
  • Today, the workers most at risk of contracting an asbestos related disease are those in construction related trades who conduct maintenance work on these buildings.
  • People that carry out any work on asbestos materials must be trained and supervised properly.
  • You need training even if you have worked with asbestos in the past.
  • Refresher training is needed every year, or more often
  • There is no cure for asbestos diseases.
  • Around 75% of those who develop mesothelioma die within one year of diagnosis

Regulations

There are a number of pieces of legislation designed to protect workers from exposure to asbestos, including the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2006'. Regulation 4 of these regulations is known as 'Duty to Manage' and covers non-domestic premises. This requires dutyholders (normally building owners or managers) to take reasonable steps to identify and record where asbestos could be present, its condition, and to take steps to reduce the risks of anyone being exposed. They must also provide this information to people who are likely to work on or disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).

Overall scale of disease including trends

The Health and Safety Executive maintains a register of all deaths where death certificates mention asbestosis. These deaths include those where the underlying cause is specifically identified as asbestosis, but also those with other underlying causes but where asbestosis was nevertheless mentioned in the textual description of the cause of death. (The underlying cause of death is defined as the disease or injury that initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death.) Thus the total number of deaths on the asbestosis register gives an indication of the number of individuals who were suffering from asbestosis when they died. In 2006 there were 393 deaths where the death certificate mentioned asbestosis and of these 111 had asbestos recorded as the underlying cause of death
