Record Fine for Fire Safety Breach
Fashion retailer New Look has been fined a record £400,000 plus £136,052 in costs for breaches of the fire safety regulation. A fire broke out in April 2007 at the Oxford Street store, resulting in 35 fire engines being called to the scene and 450 people being evacuated from the area. New Look pleaded guilty to having an inadequate fire risk assessment, no staff training regarding fire safety, and thus no clear evacuation plan. In addition, Oxford Street was closed for two days causing massive traffic disruption. The fine is the largest handed out by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
